One of those factors is the number of fouls. Shooting fouls often make a game longer because the clock is stopped and two free throws can take up some time. One also has to consider the timeouts and how close the game is. The closer the game, the higher chance that both teams will utilize all of their timeouts during the game.
The on court entertainment when at the arena can consist of different competitions such as half court shooting competitions and other crazy games that entertainment people dream up.
There are also dance teams that each NBA team has. NBA teams have a full staff of people that handle the in game entertainment. If you are watching on television, you will have commercials, but they never seem too long or like they break up the flow of the game. The NBA does an excellent job of keeping the game going. It never seems like an NBA game drags on.
One thing you will notice is the amount of timeouts used at the end of the game. It can seem like a lot and make the last 5 minutes seem like a long time. If you are new to the game and you look up and think oh there are only 3 minutes left, we should be out of here soon, you might be in for a big surprise as those last 2-3 minutes can take 15 -20 minutes in actual time. In baseball games, you can go 5 innings or more without a run which could be over 1.5 hours. Taking kids to a baseball game that is low scoring can be difficult. In basketball the action is constant and the entertainment value is high.
Something else in the NBA game that makes it different and a faster pace is the 24 second shot clock. This requires a team to take a shot that at least hits the rim with 24 second after taking over possession. This causes more shots to happen then in a college game or a high school game. Unlike the NBA, there are no rules against zone defenses or staying out of the key on defense. This can make the game more difficult to score a basketball when compared to the NBA game. There is also no shot clock, so possessions can take longer as the better teams might remain patient until they can get a quality shot.
The high school basketball game has evolved to a higher pace game with more 3 point shots. As kids are growing up and watching their favorite stars and they watch the NBA players hitting 3 point shots and taking the ball to the hoop, they often model their game after these NBA stars.

Overall, it is an opportunity for kids to play more and more basketball, develop their court awareness and get the game reps that it requires to reach the highest level in their basketball journey.
